Rottweiler with Hip Dysplasia

Update on Pepin’s progress - 21st April 2010

Hi Cathy,

It has been quite a long time since I have emailed you.  Hope you had a good Christmas and New Year.  Just thought I’d update you on how our boy it going.  He has been quite good.  He is now eating a better variety of food, still mostly chicken mince but we now add pasta or rice, cheese and LSA, sometimes egg which he eats with no problems.  Still won’t eat out of his bowl but wolfs it down none the less.

He had a problem about a month ago.  The centre pads of his worst hind leg became swollen and he was very defensive and wouldn’t let me check it too much.  He seemed to get worse and was on three legs.  I hadn’t noticed him do anything so I gave him the accident remedy and some fever remedy but when he wasn’t any better after four days I called the vet as I though maybe he had broken his toes/foot and it was now infected.  The vet I have now is simpathetic to alternate medicine so I thought I’d see what he thought.  He really couldn’t find anything either as Pepin was very cranky when he tried to handle his feet.  The vet said to continue with the accident remedy and see how he went.  Another five or so days later I noticed a lump on his toe and gave it a squeeze as best I could to see if there was any pus but nothing came out.  Two days later again I noticed a dark mark on the same toe and eventually it turned out to be a thorn of some sort.  It took a few days more for it all to work out but he is back to his normal self.  It was a big sigh of relief for us.

Anyway we are very happy with Pepin.  He is the best he has been since he was about six months old.  He loves his walks even thought they are fairly short and absolutely loves the beach and swimming.  Most of all he seems contented within himself.  Our next challenge is to put him in a kennel while we go on holiday.  I am thinking I’ll give him a short trial before our four week break to get him used to being away from us and to get the kennel owners used to his medicines and eating problem.  I think he will be a sook as I really mothered him too much when he was so sick, thinking he would not be here for so long.  He probably runs us more than we run him!!

I have attached a photo of Pepin.  He really looks quite good for a deformed dog!

Well that’s about all for now.  Hope everything is going along smoothly at your end.

Regards,

Janet

Janet, C. contacted us in June 2009 about her Rottweiler with hip dysplasia, her original email follows:pepin-july-09-004

I have a Rotty dog (nearly 9 months old) which has been diagnosed as having dysplasia in some degree in his joints.  He has a very bad back leg and limps noticeably.  He has been on pain relief and anti-inflammatory tabs off and on for about three months but eventually he goes off his food and so we take him off the tablets.  He actually does not seem to be in that much pain though the vet says he would definately be.  I was wondering if you could help me to manage any pain/inflammation he has with any of your products.  My neighbour told me about you and I thought it would be better to help our poor boy with natural products if possible.  I seem to hit a brick wall at the vets and am tired of trying new tabs and trying to get him to eat.  He does seem to know when there is a foreign taste in his food and therefore does not eat it.  I’ve taken him off everything now as I feel he is not getting any worse by not having the arthritic powder, Vitamin C, calcium, anti-inflammatories and pain killer - over kill!!  I would be grateful for any help you can give me.  It doesn’t seem to be covered in your web site but being a user of natural remedies myself I know they can work.

We were working on natural pain management in an attempt to give Pepin maybe a longer happier life.  We worked together on detoxes and pain management strategies and on 30 September Janet email back the following:

Been quite a while since I emailed you.  Pepin has been doing very well.  He is walking/swimming for longer with no signs of tiredness or pain.  And he is even running around like there is no tomorrow.  He still has a limp which, from the look of his hip joint, cannot be corrected (the joint is deformed) and is slightly under muscled in his hind legs but I am amazed at how good he has been when the vet and breeder both said I would probably he putting him to sleep before he turned one year old.  He had his birthday last week and I’m grateful I found you in time to give him a better and longer outlook.  He still has his same old eating problems.  Sometimes he eats everything, sometimes is selective, sometimes he feeds himself and sometimes I stuff the food down his neck but I know he wants to eat but there seems to be an underlying problem which tells him not to eat himself.  Can’t explain it.  But he is a good size and does eat enough.  I don’t worry so much now.  l think this is the way we’ll be for a long long time.

With our knowledge growing constantly we can now offer Janet and Pepin a healing plan.  Pepin will commence that during the week of 11 October and we will update on his progress in a months time.
