Retained Placenta in Sheep

The placenta is the feeding sack that nourishes the foetus during pregnancy and should pass shortly after the birth of the lamb/s.

It is difficult to determine if the placenta has passed in part or in full because unlike humans, the mother will have eaten this vitamin rich parcel as it comes out.  This is a natural process and although not to humans liking does ensure the mother has enough nutrients to feed her baby in the early stages after birth.

The passing of the placenta and any other birthing discharge is naturally stimulated by the lamb suckling.  Therefore it is ideal for the lamb to feed as soon as possible after birth.

We are farmers and breeders of short haired border collies and it has been our practice for the past ten years, since commencing the use of homeopathic medicines to treat the mum as soon after birth with a homeopathic shock remedy which can be found in the Heal with Ease Beginners Kit. This releases shock that the mum may have gone through during birthing and is carried to the baby through her milk to lift their shock as well.

Approx. 1/2 hour after the shock remedy is administered we give the Retained Placenta remedy in the Heal with Ease Breeders Kit.  Whether there is placenta left behind or not, this remedy will release any birthing bits and will assist with the retraction of the uterus and bringing in the milk.  However if the placenta is still inside and you just don’t know it will be a vital step in saving your ewe.  Now being farmers we are aware that access to stock animals is not as easy as treating a horse or puppies for example.  However if you have stud sheep or only a few you probably have them quiet and nice and handy during lambing.  If you come across a ewe in the paddock that you suspect has retained placenta, keep her in the shade with her baby (if possible) and keep her hydrated and fed.  Use the above remedies as described as soon after finding her as possible.

After lambing on larger mobs it is good practice to bring them through the yards are treat with the shock remedy and the retained placenta remedy to assist with uterus condition and fertility for next joining.

The Retained Placenta remedy is part of the Heal with Ease Breeders Kit.  We always recommend that Breeders of all animals have the three basic kits – Beginners, Extension and Breeders, thereby giving them a range of remedies to deal with most issues that arise in their animals.

You can also purchase the Retained Placenta remedy on its own for $50 for 50ml bottle (approx. 350 doses per bottle), plus $5 postage.

Help your Dog Naturally – Retained Placenta in Dogs

This page provides information on the symptoms, signs and natural homeopathic treatment of retained placenta in bitches.

What is retained placenta

jorja-and-her-pups

The placenta is the feeding sack that nourishes the foetus during pregnancy.  One will pass with each pup during the birthing process and will be consumed by the bitch along with the sack that surrounds each pup.  It is difficult to determine if all the placentas have passed in part or in full because unlike humans, the mother will have eaten this vitamin rich parcel as it comes out.  This is a natural process and although not to humans liking does ensure the mother has enough nutrients to feed her babies in the early stages after birth.

The passing of the placenta and any other birthing discharge is naturally stimulated by the babies suckling.  Therefore it is ideal for the babies to feed as soon as possible after birth.  If left to themselves they will feed between the birth of each pup.  The suckling from the already born pups will stimulate the contractions that bring on the next pup.  As a result we often see the delivery of subsequent babies come quicker.

We are breeders of short haired border collies and it has been our practice for the past ten years, since commencing the use of homeopathic medicines to treat the mum as soon after birth with a homeopathic shock remedy which can be found in the Heal with Ease Beginners Kit. This releases shock that the mum may have gone through during birthing and is carried to the babies through her milk to lift their shock as well.

Approx. 1/2 hour after the shock remedy is administered we give the Retained Placenta remedy in the Heal with Ease Breeders Kit.  Whether there is placenta left behind or not, this remedy will release any birthing bits and will assist with the retraction of the uterus and bringing in the milk.  However if the placenta is still inside and you just don’t know it will be a vital step in saving your bitch.

If you have a bitch that has whelped and you are unsure if she has a retained placenta, the signs you will be seeing will be a general ill health, lethargy, vaginal discharge that lasts more than 48 hours after birthing has finished, lack of interest in pups, loss of appetite.  She will generally be in a bad way and treatment of some sort is required asap.  If surgical intervention occurs you may find it is difficult to get her back in pup.  The homeopathic remedies in the Breeders Pack will help you to lift out the shock of ordeal, cleanse her uterus and increase her fertility for future litters.  When you purchase the Breeders Pack we are here to support you to achieve this goal.

The Retained Placenta remedy is part of the Heal with Ease Breeders Kit.  We always recommend that Breeders of all animals have the three basic kits – Beginners, Extension and Breeders, thereby giving them a range of remedies to deal with most issues that arise in their animals.

Retained placenta in horses

The most obvious sign of a retained placenta is the appearance of a variable portion of the placenta protruding from the vulval opening. Less commonly no placenta may be visible. This either meanstara1 that no part of the placenta has been passed or, more likely, portion of the placenta remains attached. The placenta should initially be tied up in order to prevent touching the hocks. As uterine contraction plays an important role in the release of the fetal membranes it is ideal that the foal feed shortly after birth to stimulate further uterine contractions.

Unless you are there it is hard to tell if the placenta has been released.  The mare will of course consume the placenta in the process of cleaning up the foal.  If you have your Retained Placenta remedy on hand then give it to the mare anyway.  It won’t do any harm and at the very least will assist with the retraction of the uterus and bringing in the milk.  However if the placenta is still inside and you just don’t know it will be a vital step in saving your mare.

As a matter of course we always treat the mares with the Retained Placenta remedy as soon as possible after birth.  This remedy stimulates the contractions to help with the expulsion of any remaining placenta.  The remedy also aids the uterus in its efforts to return to usually shape and will also help the mare bring good milk over the following week.

The Retained Placenta remedy is part of the Heal with Ease Breeders Kit.  We always recommend that Breeders of all animals have the three basic kits – Beginners, Extension and Breeders, thereby giving them a range of remedies to deal with most issues that arise in their animals.

Mastitis in Dogs

Mastitis mainly occurs shortly after birth as the milk ‘comes in’ and also at time of weaning when one or more glands become swollen, hot and tender to the touch. The milk jorja-and-her-pupsbecomes curdled and yellow after a while and in neglected cases discolouration of the mammary region occurs. The bitch is obviously in pain and discomfort and has an anxious expression.

As breeders of dogs and farmers we have seen mastitis occur in all range of animals. We recommend for Breeders that they have the three Heal with Ease kits on hand to deal with the range of issues that can come up during and after birth and for treatment of lactating mum and puppies issues.

The three kits will provide you with a range of remedies to treat mastitis in all animals, not just bitches. Our lead remedy for Mastitis is in our Breeders kit, labelled as such, but other remedies will become invaluable to the breeder during these stressful times. We recommend our Sudden Illness remedy (in the Extension Kit) for the sudden onset of the initial stage to assist with the emotional distress it causes the mother, the Fever remedy (in the Beginners Kit) to ease the swelling and reduce the heat from the teats.

If purchased together the three kits come at a discounted rate of $500, saving $50. The Breeders pack (three kits) comes with twelve months support to get you started into breeding your animals naturally.

Improve fertility in stock animals

For many years now we have been helping many people – farmers, dog and cat breeders and even women increase the fertility in their animals and themselves to allow a happy, healthy pregnancy and birth to follow.

In women it is often seen that complicated births can affect further pregnancies.  The same is true of our domestic animals – dogs, cats, cows, horses, you name it, if a problem or slightly imperfect jorja-and-her-pupsbirth is experienced by the female then it can be hard to successfully mate them again.

Ideally breeders would have remedies at the birth to assist with shock, afterbirth, mastitis, bonding and like issues.  Remedies to help the milk drop properly for the babies, allow them to suckle properly and help mum’s uterus to cleanse and return to proper shape.  However using the homeopathic remedies, even if everything wasn’t perfect last time, we can usually assist in cleansing the uterus and reproductive system, allowing for further pregnancies without complication.

Examples of how we have used these remedies:

A few years ago two dog trialling associates of ours both had bitches that hadn’t cycled for many years.  They had just given up on them ever breeding again.  They couldn’t tell us if their last litters were difficult in any way.  We treated both bitches with the fertility remedy, six weeks to the day they both cycled for the first time in years and nine weeks later two litters were on the ground.

This story is so common to us that it seems an everyday thing, but we know that if you are waiting for a special breeder or relying on your flock or mob to get good conception/birthing rates then this is a big deal.

dscf3598An example of how this works effectively on farm was received just two weeks ago and we would like to share this with you.  Paul and Maree have a flock of stud Dorper Ewes in NSW.  Fertility hasn’t been as high as they would like and often the season has been dry enough for mum’s to abandon the lambs to ensure their own survival.

This year, Paul and Maree gave all their ewes the fertility remedy six weeks prior to putting out the rams.  This is a simple process done by putting the ewes through the race and treating with a water spray bottle containing the remedy.  The rams went out for six weeks and when it was time to lamb all ewe’s had finished within the first three weeks.  Paul and Maree went on to say that not one of their mums abandoned the lambs when other farmers in the area were having terrible trouble in that regard.

So, all this having been said, if you are a breeder of animals – farmers, dogs, cats, horses or anything else, our Breeders pack is a very cost effective way of increasing your productivity.  For $500 you get our Beginners Kit, Extension Kit, Breeders Kit and 6 specifically chosen remedies to suit your needs.   Contact us at healwithease@bigpond.com or on 0755441711, to discuss your needs.

After birth problems

An update on Jorja the beautiful Border Collie of Lisa’s.  On 8 October Jorja gave birth to another litter of 8 puppies.  The mating, pregnancy, birth and post birth all happened without any issues.  This is usually the case after treating birthing issues with the homeopathic remedies.  The remedies allow the problems to resolve and leave the body allowing the female to reproduce without any issue.  If Jorja had to have a vet procedure it is unlikely that Lisa would have had this litter without more problems.

Below is a lovely photo of Jorja and her pups.

jorja-and-her-pups

Lisa contacted us on 21 March 2009 with the following concerns:

My problem is I don’t think Jorja is producing enough milk as they (the pups) don’t feed for very long before they are all trying to swap nipples looking for more and there just isn’t any.   I know my other bitch Nyx looked like she had firm grapefruits down there, whereas Jorjas hang but are quite floppy.

So I was wondering if you know of any homepathic remedies that would assist a bitch produce more milk.  After doing a google on the subject, couldn’t find much apart from some suggestions for her diet so I have just started adding lots of high fat foods to her diet (full cream milk, cottage cheese) as well as eggs and chicken necks/wings she was already on, giving her puppy biccies but she isn’t too keen on them but eats performance biccies.    The puppies seem a little bit more settled this evening and they are still putting on weight, but I’m still worried its not enough weight gain.  She has been tending to feed them quite a lot which I don’t think is helping with milk production if she is low as she isn’t really filling back up so she wakes them for a feed and they stay hungry.   I am trying to supplement them on the bottle but that is a challenge in itself.  The littlest is the best on this.    My other option is to find a vet to show me how to tube feed as a few breeders I have spoken to said this was better than bottle feeding as you know the food is getting to them and they have known breeders to lose puppies who are being bottle fed and showing a weight gain.  Obviously as this is my first litter, already nervous enough for their welfare.

Any advice would be appreciated.

We got back to Lisa immediately advising that in our breeding of working dogs and in the experience of our clients, her Jorja was probably not fully cleaned out after the birth.  We had remedies that would help Jorja to clean our her uterus and bring her milk down.  This would take any infection out of her body as well.

Lisa came in a hurry to collect her remedies and this was her email two days later:

Gave her the stuff Sunday arvo and evening.  She did have a bit of blood and gunk in her discharge and faeces immediately after, so she probably did have some stuff left inside her.  She seemed a bit better later that on but I was a bit worried about her in the early hours of the morning as she

She was still panting heavily and she didn’t look the best.  So I gave her another 2 treatments of the no 2 bottle as I read you could give up to 6 in 24 hours.  Her milk still wasn’t good so had another night of hungry puppies, even despite my taking them to the vet Sunday evening for a tube feeding as she basically had nothing to give them and they were screaming and no matter how hard I tried could not get them to bottle feed.

Anyway yesterday morning, she was keen to eat so just kept feeding her as much as she wanted to eat and then took her and the pups to another breeders for the day so she could keep an eye on them all as I had to work, but she said they were good all day, and fed regularly plus it feels like there is more milk in there not just saggy boobs.  She also had a big dinner last night (chuck steak, chicken necks, meat offcuts)  and is also noticeably drinking more water again.  So overnight was the real test and the puppies were much better and I woke at 4.00am to find them happily feeding off her so she must have had milk so there was no screaming and I was able to get some sleep.  She happily feed them a few times while I was getting ready for work and again was keen to have her breaky and fluids and get back in and feed them so they were all fed and contented when I left for work.  My neighbour Kerry was going over at lunch today to check on them all and also to see if Jorja wanted to eat anything and to also give her some more puppy milk formula as she is keen on this stuff and apparently she woofed it all down.  She is only a small bitch anyway, so I know next time she has a litter what to do and make sure she keeps her food and fluids up after the puppies are born as it definately has had a big impact on her milk production.  She still has a slight discharge, but its not as thick and yukky as it was but rather just watery blood and have checked to make sure there was no smell.

The Breeders pack that Lisa purchased to achieve this healing with Jorja was $500, the value of only one of her well bred pups.  Lisa will have her kit for many years and many litters to come.  The bonus with the Breeders pack is that Lisa will be able to pick up six additional remedies at no cost over the next twelve months.  They will be determined on what she needs as new situations come up.

In her kit she has remedies that will help her quietly wean the pups without any upset to mum or the babies.  Also a remedy if unlike Jorja her next litter mum doesn’t want to mother up with the pups.  There is also a remedy for Mastitis, Grief and a Bone knit remedy for healing bone fractures.

Amazing value and Lisa is more than happy with the outcome.

Mastitis Remedy

Great affinity for serous membranes, and its symptoms are all worse for movement.  These two points are a good basic guide to its use in cattle.  Suitable cases of dry hard cough, dry rubbing sounds from the chest on auscultation, dry mouth, copious thirst, painful swollen joints, mastitis, etc, all show the modality of being worse for movement.  The pneumonia calf will stand while the others run past it, or it may lie on its more painful lung to restrict movement.  The mastitis cow will stand while she is examined, despite her painful, swollen hard udder, or she may lie firmly on the affected quarter to limit movements.  Her milk is usually diminished.  Arthritic animals show hot, painful, swollen joints.  All types of Bryonia illness see the animal lying down a great deal of the day in order to relieve the pain from movement.  Symptoms may be worse in warmer surroundings.

Grief Remedy

This is a convulsive remedy, although the conditions requiring its use have strong roots in mental responses to grief and bereavement.  These may sound purely human in nature but they can strongly affect animals too.  The animal has a tendency to hysteria.  Post-weaning disease where mental trauma is considered to be a factor especially if the patient is excitable.

Bonding Remedy

Again another female remedy.  The animal is usually loose limbed, slack appearance, because all ligaments and connective tissue lose their tone and function.  The pelvis, the pelvic organs and perineum all sag.  The legs take on an aged worn-out appearance, being weak and sagging under the weight of the cow.  The cow is prone to fertility and uterine problems, and can become totally indifferent to her calf at calving time. There are venous congestions, especially in the pelvic area; per rectum, the womb feels large, thickened and flaccid, and drops away into the abdomen.  There is a tendency to prolapse.  The udder is large and sages, and there is a tendency to blood in the milk.  Symptoms are better for warmth and worse for cold. There are similarities in its action to the Retained Placenta remedy and  animals tend to ‘age’ into this remedy.

Retained Placenta remedy

This remedy is mainly for the females of the herd.  She is shy but friendly, gentle in actions, has a dainty, trusting facial expression with obviously feminine features.  She is prone to bland, catarrhal inflammation of all mucous membranes, which produce cloudy mucus or greenish-yellow mucopurulent material.  Difficult though it is to observe in a cow, especially one in milk, her thirst is markedly less than that of her fellows. Symptoms are always better in open air and worse in a warm ‘close’ humid atmosphere.  Apart from the catarrhal symptoms which can affect respiratory system, eyes, womb or udder (suppressed milk flow of a watery nature), Pulsatilla also shows symptoms of venous congestion, especially in the hind legs and pelvic organs.  Infertility can arise from ovarian inactivity, and parturition may become delayed due to venous congestive condition of the womb.
